Colleen Renihan, Co-Principal Investigator & Music FacilitatorDr. Colleen Renihan, Associate Professor and Queen's National Scholar in Music Theatre and Opera at the DAN School of Drama and Music, is a musicologist, singer, and voice teacher. Colleen's research is focused on contemporary opera and music theatre in Canada and the US. She writes about the ways that memory and historical processes and forms can be represented and enlivened through opera and music theatre.

Julia Brook, Co-Principal Investigator & Music FacilitatorDr. Julia Brook is both Director and Associate Professor at the DAN School of Drama and Music, Queen's University. Julia is a music educator and pianist who has taught individuals of all ages and abilities, first in Manitoba and now in Ontario. Julia is looking forward to singing and dancing with the participants in Rise, Shine, Sing!

Wynnpaul Varela, Research ManagerDr. Wynnpaul Varela, Research Manager, holds a PhD in Education specializing in music studio instruction and how individuals of different ages take ownership of their music learning. Originally from the UK, Dr. Varela has lived and worked in England, France, and Japan, teaching in a wide range of educational settings.

Cheryl Bruce, Graduate Research AssistantCheryl Bruce joined the Rise, Shine, Sing! team in Fall of 2020. She is currently a PhD student in the Department of Cultural Studies at Queen's University. Cheryl's research examines the experiences of female leaders in the Canadian music industry. Cheryl is also a secondary and post-secondary school teacher, clarinetist, and former radio host.

Ally Colby, Undergraduate Research AssistantAlly Colby is a third-year student in the Bachelor of Music/Concurrent Education program at Queen’s University. She works as a dance teacher and is the Director of the Queen’s University Student Music Educators’ Association. Ally is an advocate for accessible arts education, and she is excited to share her passion as part of the Rise, Shine, Sing! team!

Benjamin Ma, Undergraduate Research AssistantBenjamin Ma is a fourth-year drama major at Queen's University. His current research interests lie in the redefining of theatricality through the lens of access and inclusion, as well as the representation of the East-Asian diaspora in Canadian theatre. Ben is ecstatic to be on this year's Rise, Shine, Sing! Team, and to continue developing deeper relationships with music, theatre, and their community-building efforts.

Lalaine Ugpo, Undergraduate Research AssistantLalaine is a Filipino-Canadian actress based in Scarborough, and is part of the joint Bachelor of Music Theatre program at St Lawrence College and Queen’s University. Lalaine has extensive experience working in performance, theatre administration, and was the Artistic and Audience Relations Assistant at Guild Festival Theatre for their 2023 season.
